In recent years, the wearable technology industry has experienced exponential growth, with smartwatches and fitness trackers becoming essential accessories for health-conscious consumers. These chemicals, commonly found in fluoroelastomers (marked as FKM, FEK, FEKK, or FEKM), pose significant health risks, including hormone disruption, decreased fertility, liver damage, and increased cancer risk. Even more alarming, PFAS can transfer to the skin through regular wear, exposing users to these harmful substances daily.

The wake-up call for the 3C electronic products industry

A groundbreaking study tested 22 watch bands and found elevated levels of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) in nine of them, particularly in higher-priced bands made with fluoroelastomers. This study, the first of its kind, has sent shockwaves through the industry, highlighting the urgent need for safer alternatives.

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of PFAS, and demand for eco-friendly, non-toxic, and 3C technology materials are skyrocketing. Brands that fail to address this issue risk losing consumer trust, market share, and credibility.

Experts recommend replacing watch bands made with questionable materials and opting for safer alternatives such as silicone, silicone elastomers, nylon, or leather. In the near future, “PFAS-Free" Or "Fluorine-free" Labels are expected to become a standard requirement for wearable devices.
